fixed for ya

Definitely.

I think Apple have said the Macbook Air is their best selling Mac haven't they? Numbers for the desktop Macs combined probably don't touch the Air or lower end Macbook Pros.

So another spec bump in MacBook Pros, M1 Max is still powerful, we need more than just a chip upgrade

Can the MacBooks have a smaller cut out just for a basic webcam, every windows laptop has it in the thin bezel, 3 years later and nothing has changed

I sincerely hope that the new mini allows me to get more RAM than my base model M1 mini. More storage as well (512 rather than 256), but I want to be able to run a Fusion VM as well as everything else.

Advice: Instead of leaning on Windows emulation, just buy yourself a Mac Mini-like little PC. That's what I did when I embraced Silicon. Instead of ARM Windows (which is not full Windows), you will have full Windows on dedicated hardware. You will also have all of the related benefits of Windows, including highly competitive RAM & SSD pricing so you can get quite a loaded system for much less than we pay for Apple equivalents.

I picked up a PC "Mini" from Minisforum. For less than Apple charges for an 8TB SSD upgrade (not including the rest of the Mac), I got a loaded PC with dedicated graphics card, 10TB of fast SSD and 32GB of RAM. It does all of the Windows stuff I need and Mac is then focused on only Mac stuff.

I also chose a 5K2K monitor with more than one input so I can have both hooked up at all times and very easily switch between the two.

The only thing I want is USB-C Mac accessories to finally complete this damn transition
I agree that having Lightning on Mac peripherals is silly - always has been, these were introduced after the USB-C only 12" MacBook so they could have had USB-C from day one.

However... needing to keep one USB-whatever-to Lighting cable around to charge mostly desktop-based peripherals hardly seems like one of the Labours of Hercules and I can't really see it as a deal-breaker.

USB-C isn't going to make these accessories perform any better.

Are we really excited about a Mac Mini physical size reduction?
I've yet to see any rational argument for making the Mini smaller - it seems like pure form over function - and is going to take more desk space if it means you can't stack things on it and/or need extra hubs/docks because they've cut ports. Front ports (even type-C) are nice if they are extra ports for memory sticks etc. but not of they've been moved from the rear, meaning you end up with peripherals permanently connected to the front.

I'm OK with/resigned to USB-C ports on a desktop machine provided the existing USB-A ports get replaced one-for-one with USB-C and aren't crammed so close together that you can't put adapters on them. Gurman's prediction of 5 x USB-C plus ethernet, HDMI and internal power on the M4 Pro mini isn't so bad, but it's still one fewer USB port than the existing M2 Pro - one port closer to needing a hub - and we don't know what the regular M4 will get. Keeping ethernet, HDMI and internal power is something I'll believe when I see it (and that's going to be one heck of a busy rear panel on an Apple TV sized device).

What's there to update with the studio display?
How about the things that users of many half-decent displays costing a fraction of the price take for granted?
  • secondary DisplayPort/HDMI input so you can use it with consoles, streaming boxes, raspberry pis, PCs.
  • Proper detachable IEC mains cable
  • VESA mounting build in as standard (it's just 4 threaded holes for pity's sake!) without having to order a special version that comes without any stand.
  • Height-adjustable stand as standard
More debatable, but still:
  • 3:2 ratio screen. Better for everything except watching TV (if I wanted a TV, I'd buy a TV)
  • Lower-cost, but matching, "just the display" version for people who just want a display (or maybe a dual display setup) for their Mini/Studio and don't want to pay for a deluxe MacBook dock with an expensive sound system and 90W MacBook charging (that massive slimline power supply...).
However, big problem is that, for that price, I'd want it to still be one of the best displays around in 7 years time (just like my 2017 5k iMac is) - but I suspect that newer/better display tech (miniLED, microLED, OLED...) is now just around the corner.

I personally feel like they need to slow down on updates.

I have my M2 MBA, and M2 16” MBP.

It’s going to get to the point where people are going to be so hesitant to upgrade.

If you're happy with what you have, the upgrade is unnecessary. However, since many have older, in some cases much older hardware, it may be an ideal time to upgrade for them, not you.

It is just so convenient using a VM. :)

I've got a Windows desktop with plenty of memory and storage and I use it with Remote Desktop. But it is Windows 10 and cannot be updated. And I haven't managed to find a way to power it on remotely so have to go and switch it on - which isn't always possible. (It will wake from some sleep states but it ends up being frustratingly inconsistent.)

I've got a Fusion VM on my MBP and it does what I need just fine. I simply want to use the same VM copied to my mini.

“Introducing the all-new M4 iMac. Taking inspiration from the iconic iMac G4 with its floating display, this M4 iMac has a 30” display with built-in height adjustment and swivel. It even rotates to portrait.”

…sorry I must have been dreaming.:p

I'm perfectly happy with my M1 Max, but wouldn't it be great if Apple introduced an M4 Ultra in a Mac Pro that could accommodate many more M4 Ultras in a multiprocessor or ‘distributed computing’ system? Simply because they can.
What kind of crazy computing power could such a thing have? The existing case could probably even cool it.

Even thought I just bought the iMac M3 maxed out, I'll be happy to see an iMac M4. Meaning that Apple has not abandoned the development of iMacs yet. I hope they never do. For the everyday users the iMac is perfect. Even if you want to do high end stuff on it, its very capable.

Pretty amazing that only in 2026 there will be a minor reason to upgrade from the 2021 M1 Pro, and even OLED and being slightly thinner are not that important as the 120hz miniled is already pretty great and the current MacBook is not that bulky.

Might not be until 2028 that performance will be an actual reason to buy a new MacBook Pro.

Are we really excited about a Mac Mini physical size reduction? I see that like a new tattoo- "oooooh, ahhhhhh" at first glance and then the reaction is fully realized. Then you just live with it.

We're seemingly cheering on a smaller-size desktop that (relative size) probably matters to nearly no one and besides the price likely being at least as high, we're also paying for that smaller size with the loss of a couple of (still) useful ports (in 2024).

Wouldn't we be just as excited if Apple was refreshing the Mac mini form factor as is? Still getting M4 and M4PRO... but keeping ALL of the ports and no "what if" concerns about temperature, ejected power supply, ethernet via power supply(?), and so on.

I think it's great that an updated Mac Mini is probably about to hit. But physical size of it seems towards nothing (or even negative) to me. I have a Mini and have NEVER once thought how much better it would be if it was a smaller physical size with less ports. But maybe others have some kind of problem fitting the existing Mini somewhere and need an AppleTV-sized Mac with fewer ports. If so, good for you.
I’m curious about pricing. Mac minis are too expensive for the awful RAM and SSD configurations provided imo.

Definitely.

I think Apple have said the Macbook Air is their best selling Mac haven't they? Numbers for the desktop Macs combined probably don't touch the Air or lower end Macbook Pros.
Which may explain why software glitches on Mac desktops take AGES to get fixed, if at all.

I'm having a hard time upgrading from this M1 MBP.
The M1 Macbook is definitely an excellent machine. If there's one product I would point to as a benchmark of what Apple is (still) capable of if they really want to deliver, it's this.
And it's not that the models that came after it are bad, but they do feel more like incremental upgrades.

Notwithstanding the above, I personally mostly look forward to the new iPad Mini (hopefully without/with less Jelly scrolling and maybe 128GB base storage) - I'm still on a Mini 5 and it's starting to show its age.
