I have an M1 MacBook Air. It works ok with some light weight program development. But recently I started gaming and it’s getting tight in some areas.

It’s sluggish with Mario Odyssey. Mario Galaxy would go like frame by frame whereas Galaxy 2 almost freezes. I am thinking of upgrading to M4 mini base. Not sure if it will be enough? Or should I + 8G ram or get M5 MacBook Air?

As first step you need to decide between a desktop and a laptop. Only you know if you use it in more than one place. Then one can look at the required specs.

For portable use, I can get by with what I have now. My concern is whether any of these options is sufficient for the emulation of these games.

M5 Mac mini because there's a huge difference in performance between fan and fanless.
