Hi all I’ve just received my brand new 14” m4 max upgrading form 2020 i9 27imac and 16” m1pro mbp.
I’m too getting the same issue: ie after sleep, the machine has restarted and I can see there was a kernel panic.
It’s interesting that folks here think it’s tb5. I’m currently using a tb3 caligit dock
And I’m using my iMac as an external display over AirPlay via Thunderbolt
I also have a crucial p5 2tb nvme in a Ugreen tb4 enclosure I picked up 40% off on Black Friday. Finally, I have a Samsung ark 55” in portrait.
I get the issue almost daily after machine has been ‘sleeping for a while. I’ve currently disconnected the iMac, even though I stop AirPlay display I’ve now physically unplugged the tb4 cable . I have also unplugged the external tb drive and the dock. Going to see if I get the crash without any tb devices attached
For further context, I’ve set the machine up as brand new, and only have core apps, better display, set app, Evernote, ms office, blender, black magic, zotero, autodesk, python, r. I’m using the iMac over airplay as the 5k display is simply gorgeous and the Samsung ark is terrible for text ie reading, writing. I use it more for privately ie it has cleanser, reminders , thing3, Spotify, YouTube, videos etc. I was very tempted to buy a Studio display but I was out off with the rumours new Apple displays will be released in 2025 with the upcoming m4 studios and m4 Mac Pro. I do have a HUAWEI MATEVIEW which is soso 4k display lying around I could use as my main display. But that uses usbc. I think isolating if it’s a peripheral causing the issue, or it’s the mbp and then if it is the latter, is it hardware or software issue. I’ve tried to set up as new and problem persists
Tbh both apple support and genius appointment weren’t that helpful. Got40 was!
Certainly! Here’s a concise summary of your kernel panic based on the logs provided:
Kernel Panic Summary
Issue:
The kernel panic occurs during sleep-wake transitions, specifically when macOS attempts to change power states. The system times out after 35 seconds while invoking power state change callbacks, and the suspected culprit is the Thunderbolt subsystem (com.apple.iokit.IOThunderboltFamily).
Key Details:
1. Primary Suspect:
• com.apple.iokit.IOThunderboltFamily extension appears repeatedly in the logs, indicating an issue with Thunderbolt power management during sleep-wake transitions.
2. Context:
• Panics consistently occur after waking from sleep.
• The affected thread changes depending on the session, but all logs point to the Thunderbolt power state handler.
3. Peripheral Setup:
• Multiple Thunderbolt devices are connected, including:
• CalDigit TS3 dock
• Ugreen Thunderbolt 4 external SSD dock
• iMac used as an external display via AirPlay and Thunderbolt
4. Isolation Test Findings:
• Kernel panics cease when all Thunderbolt devices are disconnected.
• System is stable with only a Samsung Ark display connected directly via HDMI.
Likely Causes:
• Thunderbolt devices failing to transition to/from sleep properly.
• Firmware incompatibility or outdated drivers for one or more Thunderbolt devices.
• Conflict in macOS power management for connected devices.
Potential Solutions:
1. Disconnect all Thunderbolt devices and reintroduce them one at a time to identify the problematic device.
2. Update firmware and drivers for all Thunderbolt peripherals (e.g., CalDigit TS3 dock, Ugreen Thunderbolt dock).
3. Avoid simultaneous AirPlay and Thunderbolt connections to the iMac.
4. Check macOS for updates, as newer releases often include Thunderbolt-related bug fixes.

I’ll be getting an m4 ultra as my main machine when it finally drops and the m4 max mbp will go back to be used as my portable machine I take to work. I’m hoping this is all early teething issues with tb5, and things settle with a software update but I’m inside the extended return window. Genuius dude tried to convince me to keep the machine and if issue persists after the extended return window is closed in jan, they can always look at it again and use discretion. Luckily I had logged the issue and seen a genius tech person so I’ve got a case number. Been using exclusively macs since 2008 and first time I’ve had so many issues.
On the same afternoon, later appointment - I had to return my avp for a replacement (which won’t come u til end of feb)- I kept getting issues with ghosting and blurry images and then when I tried the demo version it was crystal clear! I swapped the light seal from demo to my headset to rule out having the wrong light seal size but it made no difference.
Couldn’t believe both my avp and m4 max are having major issues. The dream was the avp ultra wide would mean I don’t need a new display ever again. In reality whilst the screen mirror is ok, the text is not clear and it really can replace having the solid retina 5k display my iMac has!
