i tried several software's and online converters after googling. some didn't work, some took very long,
i am looking for something quick and simple that works

Thank you in advance

You probably don't need to convert it. m4b is just aac audio. Everything should read it nowadays.

Try this:
Go here to download "All2MP3":
http://www.tucows.com/preview/753945/All2MP3

Put it into your Applications folder.

Open the finder window with the m4b file you want to convert, or have it on the desktop "within easy reach".

Now, open All2MP3.

Next, "drag and drop" the icon for the M4b file into All2MP3's window.

All2MP3 will "digest" the file and present you with output options.

I suggest you choose highest quality and "let 'er go". The conversion may take a few minutes if the file is a large one.

I've used All2MP3 quite a bit, and it works well, but keep reading.

DO NOT -- let me repeat, DO NOT -- choose to "upgrade" ALL2MP3 using their home page.
It will download a .dmg file that has crapware in it.
I have no idea why a company that produces such a nifty app as this would do it that way.

If you download from the link I gave above, and choose to "leave it alone", it will serve you well.

ALL2MP3 DOES NOT WORK
it gives me within seconds a mp3 file that does not open and the file size is 0 bytes

any suggestions for Catalina? With Books being moved to my internal drive, I need to convert back to keep in music. :( hate to have to do it one at a time in audacity.
