Sam's Club has the MSI MPG 491CQP QD-OLED 49 inch curved monitor (5120x1440) for $799 and I am thinking of getting it to replace my current 2 27" monitors. It has DP1.4, HDMI 2.1 or USB-C connectivity.

Has anyone here used this monitor on a newer Mac, and if so how well does it perform? Is it reliable?

I almost bought it today but I recalled that I had issues with a Samsung Odyssey G9 a couple years ago on my M1Max MBP and returned it, so I figured I would ask around first.

Thanks!

I use a 49” and 57” Samsung G9 and they both work just fine at the resolution the MSI has. USB-C to DisplayPort works better than HDMI in that it consistently gives me 120Hz whereas I get 60Hz over HDMI.

I just ordered the Samsung G9 direct from Samsung today. They are offering a free 27" curved monitor along with it as well as free shipping for $799, seems like a great deal.

Thanks for the info, I have just such a cable and will use it on my new monitor when it arrived this week.

6 or 7 month followup here:

I got the two monitors, the 49" Odyssey G9 and the 27" Odyssey G5. I used the G9 on the Mac Studio at first and the G5 on the Windows machine I use for the radio desk.

The G9 worked just fine, just as advertised and I had no real complaints except for one. That complaint is nothing about the monitor but rather my use case. Here goes:

For years I used my Mac for a WFH job and usually had several windows open simultaneously. I used one browser for the POS system, another for messaging and a third for my personal stuff (never on company time of course...) I also had a window running Windows with Parallels to control our phone system. Most of the time I used 3 monitors for these and it worked fine. I used the G9 for this, replacing those 3 monitors (first 32-inch ones and later 27-inch ones). It worked great, made for a much cleaner desk, less complicated wiring and it just worked very well having more flexibility moving and sizing the various windows.

Then, I retired from the WFH job and started using the computer for personal stuff only. Mostly watching YouTube, participating in forums, some product development stuff, writing and some image work. I also would watch TV, streaming things from Netflix, AppleTV etc. It was the streaming thing that did in the G9. When I go full-screen while streaming or YouTubing the image got stretched out.

Meanwhile the use case on my Windows machine changed. I now had about a dozen instances of a specific radio programming and control application and the 2 27" monitors just would not play nice no matter how I sized things out. I realized the best solution was to swap my monitors around: use the 49" G9 on the Windows machine and the 27" G5, paired with a 27" Acer on the Mac Studio.

20 minutes later I had it all working and it was a nearly perfect solution. I could put my streaming on one screen on the Mac and leave the other for email, web browsing or writing. My ADD allows me to multitask better, if I sit and watch a movie or a show I will fall asleep in minutes. On the Windows side the wide screen worked out great for the multiple windows of varying sizes for the radio stuff.

I am happy with the G9 and G5, I got a great deal on them but it turns out I bought them for the wrong computer. If it wasn't for the streaming stuff I would still be using the 49" G9 on my Mac. I suppose I could have figured out how to make it appear as 2 monitors but this is working out so well I am probably going to leave it as is.
