.m4v + subtitle track + Chrome OS = problem?

My Samsung 3 Chromebook plays the.m4v files I made to backup my DVDs just fine, using the basic Chrome video player. Unfortunately, it doesn't play the subtitle layers encoded into them, or at least I can't find a way to make it do that. I suppose there's no fix or workaround for that? Would VLC for Chrome OS do it?

Have you tried playing one of those .m4v files on a Windows or Mac to confirm that it is encoded correctly with the subtitles?

Yes, it works fine on my Mac.

Perhaps convert again to mp4?

If the device is capable of running Android apps try Kodi.
