You should be able to run macOS on an iPhone then plug it into a USB-C to turn it into a fully fledged computer. This is the future in some universe.

To each their own, I suppose. I have no desire to have my entire computing life in my pocket and with me at all times.

With everyone going on, and the amount of times I need to cross the US border and go through TSA, I don't want much of anything on me or my phone/watch.

I know that many people in my circle don’t need the horsepower of a MacBook Pro, but would really love to have ProMotion in an MacBook Air. Maybe this is the year Apple finally brings it to the Air, just like they did with all their iPhones in 2025.
I'm still on a 2017 15" MBP and these Airs slap the pants off my old MBP. I'm definitely someone that would switch to the air now as it's plenty powerful for just basic video editing/music recording. I just want that ProMotion just like you said.

I grabbed one of the M4s earlier this year, and was surprised at how thick it was. It's the exact same size, shape, weight as my 2017 13" MacBook Pro w/ Touch Bar I was replacing. Not that that's a bad thing, it's not like it's heavy or unwieldy, but it seems like "Air" for apple laptops has become "bare basic features" instead of "super thin, super light".

EDIT: and I am usually a "pro" buyer. I use FCPX and Logic daily, and this M4 Air is crazy fast.

Yeah, at some point the "lightness" became more about "light on features" as opposed to physically the thinnest & lightest machine.

I think it's premature to make cycle predictions about apple based on two releases. Apple has set a pattern of breaking patterns. m1 and m2 both, I think started with the Air, and then not for m3 and m4. There is talk of the air getting a little brother. I don't think we can expect annual refreshes of the AX, AX pro, MX, MX pro, MX max, and MX ultra. We haven't gotten it yet. Apple has a combination of product cycle lengths, which lets them adjust to external forces surprisingly quickly. But this also means that they don't stick to rigid patterns. I would continue to expect a new generation SOC every year, and I imagine their phone churn every year provides economies of scale of that but I could see some of the bigger chips lagging.

Sounds like I am keeping my maxed out M3 MacBook Air for a few generations (or more).

The Air's are that good.

FYI - kept my MacBook Air 2013 maxed for 10 years. Would have kept it for more years if able.

You mean like Samsung's DeX, but good right?

Yeah - I want this too. Right now with Apple silicon, there's really no technology barrier argument because the A-series chips are basically desktop class CPUs. Then again, today, we have to buy an iPhone, an iPad, and a MacBook if we want all that Apple can offer with software. There's no financial incentive for Apple to sell a combo device.

On the positive side, there was a time when I used to dream about an iPod, a PDA, a digital camera, and cell phone all being one device. We have that now, so there's hope!

Dumb question: if the leaked iPad M5 specs show a 35% gpu performance improvement over the m4 (that’s kind of huge imo) why would the expected mac gpu improvement be “slight”?

That’s what I thought. I think they’ve made a mistake with that. Maybe they meant the CPU improvement is slight and the GPU considerable?

Still more than satisfied with the M1 Pro's performance on the MBP. And while I appreciate the Air's size and portability, my Mac doesn't give me even the slightest reason to upgrade. And I keep reminding myself that Tahoe is on the horizon. Maybe the M6...

I will NEVER buy a laptop with a notch.
To each their own but I've never understood the strong anti-notch sentiment that some people have. It's not even visible most of the time since most applications in fullscreen have a black menu bar at the top that it blends into. And if it bothers you, a dark wallpaper will take care of it the rest of the time, since the desktop is pretty much the only place you see it. I actually forget that the notch exists at all until someone mentions it.

Yeah, I just never see it. Maybe, I noticed it for a day or two when I first bought my MBA, after that it has just faded into the background of my consciousness.

BTW - my base M2 MBA is the best computer I have ever owned. If you shop around, you can get the latest M4 MBA on sale for $799. It's a great value in my book.

The 'notch' doesn't bother me on my MBA M3.
It's a good place to hide the pointer, especially if you use the corners to other functions.

I know. This is the type of complacency which kills tech companies though. Just ask Intel.

No. You're right.

I hate those 'Steve would be pissed' type of posts, but I do remember that one of the things he maintained was that it's ok for their own products to cannibalize or compete. Some companies would have held back the iPhone to preserve the iPod cash train, but the right thing to do was to kill the iPod market and dominate the phone space.

I don't know that who uses DeX to get real work done, but the concept having it all with me is appealing. It wouldn't necessarily help with travel because I'd have to pack some sort of dock/chassis on the go, but still - I'd like to give it a try. The M4 Air logic board could be engineered to fit into a phone - and the A19 can run MacOS. Come on Apple!

Perhaps their vision is that they will all ultimately fit into smart glasses. (pun absolutely intended).

This is the only reason keeping me from buying it.
