There's a Mac version of AutoCAD and I'm not sure the PC one is supported for Parallels, but isn't it a rather single-threaded app and not all that dependent on real-time rendering, and therefore not going to get much out of the Max?Hi all,
Torn between three configs of the 16" MacBook Pro (2026, M5 generation) and hoping for input from people who actually use these day to day.
My use case:
- Video editing and color grading for a personal blog/YouTube channel
- Source footage: 6K Open Gate from a Panasonic GH7, edited down to 4K exports
- Audio post-processing with iZotope RX plugins (noise reduction, dialogue cleanup)
- From the same 4K edit, cutting vertical Reels/Shorts in Full HD
- Photo work in Capture One, Lightroom, and Photoshop
- Occasional AutoCAD via Parallels (Windows VM) — not daily, but needs to run smoothly when I do
- General office work, streaming movies
- Gaming maybe once a year (Cyberpunk 2077, WoW) — not a priority, just "nice if it works"
The three options I'm considering (all 2TB SSD):
- M5 Max, 36GB RAM, 32-core GPU, standard glass — baseline price
- M5 Pro, 48GB RAM, 20-core GPU, nano-texture display — about +8% over option 1
- M5 Max, 48GB RAM, 32-core GPU, standard glass — about +14% over option 1 (about +6% over option 2)
So the price spread across all three is fairly narrow (~14% top to bottom) — it's really a spec trade-off, not a budget decision.
Questions:
- For 6K Open Gate GH7 footage — how much does the extra GPU/media engine on the M5 Max actually help with scrubbing, debayering, and export compared to the M5 Pro? Is the difference noticeable in a real timeline, or mostly synthetic-benchmark territory?
- Is 36GB unified memory enough for this kind of pipeline (6K source footage + color grading + iZotope RX + occasional Parallels VM running simultaneously), or does that combination actually push into needing 48GB?
- Any experience cutting Full HD reels from a 4K master on M5 — proxies needed, or does the machine handle it natively without much fuss?
- Anyone running AutoCAD via Parallels on M5 — any GPU/RAM pain points worth knowing about before I commit to a config?
- For those doing color-critical work — is the nano-texture display worth it, or do you find standard glass better for accuracy despite the glare trade-off?
Given the price gap between all three is under 15%, I'm leaning toward not choosing based on cost — appreciate any real-world experience to help pick on merit.
I'm leery of any scrimping of RAM on this platform especially with VMs in the offing. So, 48.
The video editing raises a question of whether transcoding is involved or not; if so that would be a good Max point. Unfortunately I can't give you an insight as yet on the HD reel cutting.
Most of the rest of the list feels like Pro use cases except for General office work and streaming which is a base use case. So I'd tend to say, Pro.
On the screen glass, the high-gloss is enormously improved relative to, say, the MBP Retina from 12 or 13 years ago which felt like staring down a fishbowl through a clunky picture frame. There's less glare, the current screens no longer look ridiculous being paired with a matte desktop monitor, and you no longer speculate as to whether there's an air gap between the glass and the LCD panel. I've unfortunately not seen a nano-texture screen in the wild but it certainly looks as though something that lowers the stakes relative to traditional matte by narrowing the gap with gloss, so between these two datapoints it's more of a "you can't go wrong" kind of thing and you tilt one way or the other depending on how likely you are to be working with a strong light source over your shoulder (nano) versus how likely is the system to be stuffed in bags and backpacks and toted around and generally need cleaning (gloss). I also quite like the acuity of the gloss display but my old NEC PA271W is no slouch in the acuity department either, and the nano approach is inherently better still than the rather heavy matte coating on that NEC.
But for me it was gloss all the way because there was a huge sale going on gloss as B&H and MicroCenter were heavily discounting the more standard gloss/black configurations before the price increase, while there was no discount and a long wait for nano. And Max because of a serious AI use case that emerged.
