Not a big difference honestly. My payment with trade in are set at $55.12 + Tax. Without trade in would have been $77.24 + Tax.
Whoa!

I just rechecked trade in price on Apple store and it is now $200 more!

WTH !?!?!

2 weeks ago when I was shopping for an M4 Studio, it was $440.

Now it's $640 - did it appreciate in 2 weeks ???

1. Maybe not in the past 2 weeks, but it has certainly gone up in value as the prices of RAM/Storage and GPUs keep going up.
2. I think Apple pads these trade-in deals around major launches to entice users. When the M1 Pro macbooks came out, the trade-in values on 15 and 16-inch intel MacBooks mysteriously rose too. M5 Max/Ultra is a turning point for anyone holding out with an M1 Max/Ultra for sure. The neural accelerators in the GPU cores are a bigger deal than most people understand. Apple just wants to help tip those decision making scales.

IMO Apple Upgrade was put into place in order to entice people to upgrade more often. The M series systems are so good it's difficult to justify a casual upgrade. Factor in the summer price increases and keeping an older M series system makes a lot more sense. Easier to justify an upgrade when you pay by the month and can either a) turn it in for something new or b) buy it at the end of the lease (with the total cost being no more than had you purchased it outright).

Apple Upgrade is an attempt to move hardware into the subscription model.

Let's hope it totally fails then, I do not want it to become 'you will own nothing and be happy' despite the attempts by the tech industry to make it like that. Leasing a Mac just seems ridiculous but with the prices now it's is the only option for some.

It’s the best logic and finance wise option. Apple is literally taking the depreciation hit and not the customer. I predict by next year all mayor retailers will be offering lease options with the same terms as Apple.
