Work is offering me a 16" M5 pro now, or I could delay and wait for the next model. Currently have an M1 Pro.

Would you jump on the M5? Or do we really think the M6 pros might hit before end of year? It's unclear to me if there will be "regular" M6 pro machines + "ultra" M6 pro machines, or only the ultra in M6 pro? Or maybe i'll me M6 Pro regular / M6 Max ultra type model with OLED?

Other concern is that if the M6 pro models are all extremely expensive my work might only offer the M5's.

You do realize the M5 release date was less than a month ago ?

FWIW, I'm using a M2Pro and it's pretty awesome.

Yes I know. My M1 pro is fine though for now so not really in a rush. Debating if I should just hold out. I mostly want the thinner/lighter M6 version since I lug it around a lot.

In my opinion you should not wait. The future product releases from Apple are only a guess. If the M1 is serving your needs, the M5 will be more than adequate and is a significant upgrade. I don't think the M6 will be thinner or lighter as the CPU and motherboard are a small fraction of the weight and size.

The rumors are that the M6 will be thinner though not sure how much. The other items would be nice to have but honestly don't matter that much to me day to day:
- oled screen... eh, mini-led is pretty great already
- 2nm lithography chip though should have a nice single threaded performance bump. M4 pro -> M5 pro was only about a 10% lift in ST. Multi and graphics are what got the main bump

If you are able to wait, you might as well. Benefits of waiting definitely outweigh splurging right now

-The current rumor is the major redesign is happening no later than early next year, so within 12 months we are likely to see what the new design looks like
-For the same money as you are spending now, you could get an even more powerful machine with the new design
-Even if you don’t like the new design, you could use the same amount of money to buy a refurbished/used M5 machine that should also be an upgrade from an M1

Generally waiting is not a good idea because there will always be something new around the corner, but right now with MacBooks we are in the rare window where waiting actually does make sense because of the imminent redesign. If it was just a chip update (as it is 4 out of every 5 years or so), then waiting wouldn’t be worth it. This is all assuming your current workflow isn’t negatively impacted by your current machine.

If your current M1 works for you and you're more waiting for a new design change and hoping for something thinner and more portable, then the sensible choice seems to just wait and see. If you actually are hitting limitations with your work flow now on your current spec, then i don't recommend just waiting. Buy what's available now for what your needs are, because be aware, whatever their redesign ends up being, its very likely coming with a price increase.

To clarify i'm definitely waiting for my personal machine.
It's my work machine where I'm being offered an upgrade now I'm debating. I'd also be able to buy the old M1 Pro work machine for $500 which is probably worth around $700.

It’s been widely reported that the M6 is going to be a thinner and lighter design. By how much—and whether that matters in your day to day—remains to be seen.

I was just commenting somewhere else about how my spouse’s 13” MBA hardly feels any lighter than my 14” MBP and it’s over half a pound difference. I have sincere doubt that the weight of the M6 will be even that much lighter: I’d guess 0.3-0.4lbs at best. However it’s something that could certainly add up if you’re lugging it around 8 hours a day.

Bottom line though: if the M1 is currently sustaining your needs, it’s probably worth the wait.

I am unsure if the 2nm M6 MBP will release with the pro and pro max/ultra but if it is likely to release in M6 pro and Pro max in September I would be hesitant IF it was my personal purchase, which you are not concerned with. Theres plenty of great upgrades to be had going with the M5 pro because not only has M5 been very competent, the wifi has moved to wifi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 which, not amazing right now, does make it quite useful when the platform (wifi 7) matures. Unless you really need the OLED for work, id see really no reason not to update or even weigh the costs benefits because these did just release and you havent had a work upgrade in a long time. It is only an advantageous situation to say "yes please" imo.

I just jumped on that same upgrade, no regrets. What I wasn't expecting was an upgrade in screen quality from the M1 Pro to the M5 Pro, but it's definitely slighter better to my eyes, True Tone also improved, very similar to the M5 iPad Pros. I think they switched to a Qdot panel last year. I wouldn't worry about next year's models, they're going to cost a fortune.

To be clear I'm definitely waiting for M6 on my personal machine.

This is a decision on when I want to upgrade my work machine (they are allowing me to do it now to an M5 pro but I can also choose to wait).

The first M5 was October'ish. My guess is that the M5 pro/max was late due to moving focus to the new design and preparing for new production lines.
