M6 vs. M5 Pro Mac Mini Buyer's Guide

Exactly.
I don’t like these confusing lineups. Maybe Apple Marketing thinks it’s great to get people to trade up. But I’m just holding off. The M5 option somehow feels like it’s outdated already.
They have so many empty buzzwords. Pro is not pro anymore. Then there’s max and ultra. The iMac doesn’t have a 27 inch option. The standalone screens are overpriced…
And as a result I’m just keeping my 2015 iMac.
Years ago, I remember speccing up an 8 core mac pro which was a massive number of cores in the day. I figured I would justify the £7K cost as it would last me 'forever' and I would somehow be so much more productive with it. A true pro lol.
Thankfully sense prevailed and I never clicked buy. Zero regret in hindsight.
Its so easy to talk yourself into bigger specs.
The M6 would suit me fine I expect but Im disappointed that they made TB5 a pro only feature. Anyone who has bought one of the new studio displays recently and wants 120hz might need TB5, especially if adding another screen.
As for the cost. It's one of those things where you will find a way if you want it sadly. Otherwise , older M4's (perfectly good) are probably still around at some places.

I love the idea of the Mac Mini M5 Pro with 64GB RAM. So much computing power in such a small footprint. It's not cheap though, almost $4000 (with base storage).

I realize that the Mac Mini is very compact, but I still miss the SD card slot that the Mac Studio has, though I don't need a Max chip.
Apple isn't making an M6 Pro AFAIK. They're focusing on getting the M7 series expedited, as it apparently includes architectural changes for AI. (Hopefully not just scaling their Neural Engine, but major GPU and memory bandwidth changes.) At least that's the rumor.
Also, like Intel of yore, Apple may be doing a tick-tock thing with their CPUs. (I.e., process/fab improvement, architecture improvement, repeat.) Or a tick-tick-tock or whatever.
