Okay, so what is a MA623LL/B? Can you listen to it aloud and without headphones? Thanks

That's a first generation iPod touch, 8 GB. It does not have a built-in speaker or the side buttons for adjusting volume. Only difference I can tell between the A and B models is the OS. I believe the A shipped with iPod OS 1, where B ships with OS 2.0 installed.

There is no difference.
You can always upgrade the software to the newest, 3.1.2 for a nominal fee of $10. (Don't quote me on the price, I know it's under 20)
