My peace of mind is OS X itself and my ability not to visit shady websites.
A respectable Web site can be a conduit (is that the right word?) for malware due either to a malicious ad that it gets from its ad network or to getting hacked. But, yeah, you don't need anti-malware on a Mac.

If I were to cut off all of my fingers, I'd be able to count on one hand how many times my computer has been infected in the last decade. I'm not blind enough to say it's impossible, but I'm far from concerned about the potential threats.

I may go for the MU for DevonThink and DiskAid. Prizmo seems nice too. No use for the rest.

I am interested in buying MacUpdate's bundle; when is the last day that I can buy it?

Howdy guys 'n gals, I'm Nate Houle, founder of MacLegion. Just wanted to let you know I'm here if you have any questions. This isn't a plug, just trying to help. There are a couple apps in our bundle I use daily and if you haven't used 'em I'd urge you to try, (free trials available on our site) LaunchBar, TasksBox, Habits and MainMenu Pro. I literally use all those apps every day... Well, I just started using TasksBox as the debut release paralleled our bundle launch so it was just made available to the public today. I've been using Wunderlist but TasksBox seems like an even better alternative, really excited to try out the iOS companion apps for it. Also, MUPromo has a couple apps in their bundle I use often. If you haven't tried iStat Menus, DiskAid or DEVONthink Pro, definitely give those a try. DEVONthink Pro is really good at what it does but I don't really use it as much now that I'm out of school. Anyway, don't hesitate to ask any questions or give us feedback related to the bundle, our site, future offerings, and/or any ideas you may have... Or just say "hi".

Lots of people seem to want Devonthink.

I'd be happy to sell my Devonthink license for $10 to anyone who wants it. PM me.

I'm very interested in purchasing one of these bundles, but I will be getting a new iMac at the end of the month (after the deal ends). If I were to purchase the bundle would I then be able to re-download or transfer all of the apps to my new iMac at no cost? Could I purchase now and wait to download until I get my new one?

I'm still on my first and only Mac so I don't have any experience with app sharing and transfers.

Would this essentially be the cheapest way to get Parallels if I've never purchased it before?

if there wouldn't be vmware fusion it would be a good deal. i moved back to vmware because i found it more stable (using it 8hrs+ per day).

Not needed, explain me why.

Here's a link for you why it's not needed.

Does anybody know if its possible to install Parallels without it adding Mac shell app shortcuts for every app on your Windows image?

It did that once for me and I switched to VMWare.

EDIT: Bought it anyway. I gave my VMWare license to a family member recently because I wasn't using it, and MotionComposer looks like just the kind of thing I need right now.

let me know if you will go back to vmware. - i swapped between both on various versions and in the end always returned back to vmware. it looks very tempting because parallels is updating very often. but the point is: vmware doesnt need many updates. it's working rock solid. at least for me. i'm a bigtime fan of fusion.

----------

Having used Parallels up through V7, and VMware Fusion up through the same time period, I don't see why anybody would purchase either product now. VirtualBox is a free, very mature product that does everything I need -- I run both Linux and Windows VMs on my MacBook Pro, sometimes simultaneously.

And I really have to wonder why anybody would need a product to keep software updated.

There may be some components of this bundle that are of interest to some people, but in many cases free is much better than cheap.

i agree that virtualbox is an excellent alternative to both vmware and parallels. to be honest i think in the end it is very much "personal taste" which product you prefer. - for me it was fusion, but i can fully understand you're 100% behind virtualbox. also parallels is definately a good product. it's really personal preference.

13 days, 9 hours left in the sale. The price may increase over this time, so I assume it's best to get it early.

To be clear, the price of the MacUpdate bundle will be $49.99 for its duration. The price will neither go up nor down.

In a word, this is no problem. You will simply down the apps and register them on your new Mac. If you install/activate Parallels on another Mac first, you'll need to deactivate it from that Mac first, but that's the only app with that kind of activation.

Hi Everyone,

It's always nice to see the exposure and support MacRumors gives our bundles. I can only speak for our bundle, but to answer some of the questions:

1. Most of the titles in our bundle have never been in another bundle (or, if they have, the versions we're selling represent a paid upgrade from the previous version that might have been in a bundle, meaning they still deliver additional value), this includes:
  • Parallels Desktop 8
  • DEVONthink Pro 2 (the Pro version has never been in a bundle, period)
  • Prizmo 2 (no version has ever been in a bundle)
  • 1000 OpenType Fonts
  • iStat Menus 4
  • Mac Internet Security 2013

2. Regarding paid upgrades, we ensure that no developer has a new version that you would have to pay for on the horizon for at least 3 months after our bundle, and to the best of my understanding I don't expect any paid upgrades for any of the titles in our bundle to emerge for at least 6 months.

Even with paid upgrades, you'll generally end up ahead with our bundles (and of course the version you buy as part of the bundle will continue to work as it does now, it's not as if apps stop working when a new version is released).

For instance, the upgrade price from DEVONthink Pro 1 to DEVONthink Pro 2 is $30. Assuming the same pricing is in place when version 3 emerges one day, you will be able to go from our bundle ($49.99) to DEVONthink Pro 3 (+$30) for the same price as DEVONthink Pro 3 would cost by itself ($79.99). But you get to use DEVONthink Pro 2 in the mean time, and you get 9 other apps!

Even in the case where the upgrade math isn't quite as favorable, the value is still apparent. Parallels Desktop gets upgraded on an annual basis (usually in Q4) and upgrades costs $49.99. The cost of acquiring Parallels Desktop 8 now as part of our bundle ($49.99) plus the upgrade to version 9 (+$49.99) totals only $20 more than what version 9 would cost you to buy when it's released. Yet for that extra $20 you've been able to use version 8 for many months and got 9 other apps.

3. In terms of Parallels vs. Fusion, MacTech did an exhaustive comparison and once again found Parallels delivers better performance and battery life (in some cases substantial differences; 40% better battery life and 50% better performance in some tests). VirtualBox isn't really a competitor, it's a much more basic solution with none of the OS X integration or graphics support that Parallels and Fusion both offer. It's free, which is nice, but any regular virtual machine users will see a big improvement going to Parallels Desktop. http://www.mactech.com/2013-01/virtualization-benchmarks

4. Regarding Apple's App Store and MacUpdate Desktop, the App Store will only update the apps you buy/download from the App Store. Obviously none of the apps in our bundles are App Store apps, and there are thousands of other titles that aren't on the App Store. MacUpdate Desktop also doesn't just manage apps, but also many plug-ins and preference panes, which the AppStore does not support.

5. Regarding DEVONthink Pro and scanners (eldaria's comment), the Pro Office version offers improved native support for scanners (scanning directly to the app), but nothing prevents you from scanning the document as you normally would and then dragging the PDF to DEVONthink Pro. This is how I personally use DEVONthink Pro and my ScanSnap S510M. Upgrades from the Pro version ($79.99) to the Pro Office version ($149.99) can be purchased for $70 from http://www.devontechnologies.com/discounts/upgrade-assistant.html

Of course, thanks to our bundle being only $49.99 it means you can get the Pro Office for a net cost of just $119.99... a $30 savings, plus you get 9 other apps.

We'll be keeping an eye on this thread in case any other questions or concerns come up. Thanks for your support!

regarding mac update desktop-how long is our subscription to that service ? Your site seems to imply that we would have to pay again for the app after a certain amount of time? Is that the case?

Ah yes, but Misha remember: you're speaking to a forum full of people that believe if Apple releases an updated product more than once a year their iPad will magically cease to function or their iPhone won't place calls anymore...

sophos antivirus is free.

And, if you do your homework and read the link you would know by now you should avoid it as the plague.

But again link:

Despite its detection rate, Sophos should be avoided, as it could increase your Mac's vulnerability, as described here and here.

----------

Regarding Internet Security 2013, Intego has done a good job with this latest version of making the app very unobtrusive. It quietly runs in the background and only gets your attention when it detects a virus (as it did in an email attachment I received recently; it was a Windows virus, mind you, but it still quarantined it). Macs are still really secure as is, but this is starting to change a bit (Apple acknowledged just last month that a number of its employees computers had been hacked).

Not needed, I went from 10.0 all the way up to 10.5.8 skipped SL and Lion and am on ML now, in all the 11 years or so I never had a virus nor Malware.
Waste of peoples money.

But, I don't say anything about the other 9 Apps, so, for many people it's still a good deal.

I may buy the MacUpdate bundle just for DEVONthink but wondered if there was anyone out there with experience with both DEVONthink and Omnifocus? I'm currently using Omnifocus and like it. Probably my favorite feature is the sync since I put a copy on both my MP and MBP as well as my iPad and iPhone.

So, aside from general impressions of one program versus the other, if you're using DEVONthink across multiple devices how do you keep projects sync'd up?

As of version 2.5 (released last week) they support syncing within the app. See this for more info: http://blog.devontechnologies.com/2012/03/update-devonthink-sync-technology/

If you already have a virtualization application (vmware or parallels) then the bundle is less appealing which is my case.

I bought the bundle last year and have parallels 7. I think if I upgrade it would be $49.99. However if I buy the bundle, I can give my wife parallels 7 and use 8 on my machine. This wouldn't be possible with just an upgrade.

I wish there was just one more app for anybody in the bunch. Last year Civ 5 was included, which was enough to push it over the edge.

Actually DEVONthink Pro was in a MacLegion bundle in 2011. That was the first time the Pro version had been in a bundle. Not trying to step on any toes, I think your bundle rocks Misha, I think you're doing a great job, just keepin' the facts straight.

Nate

I bought both bundles. This is too good to pass up. Some of the programs Ive purchased in other bundles didn't excite me but now I use them regularly. Toast alone costs $100 just to upgrade. I've been holding off and this price fits my budget.
I'm also thinking because of this great deal there will be a Toast 12 in the next month or so and probably a Parallels 9 soon.

I guess Parallels Desktop 9 is gonna be released in the next few weeks, then?
Parallels releases its new versions in the fall. I bought 6 through a MacUpdate bundle in 2011. Then updated to 7 that fall. Then 8 came out last fall. (Bought this one through a MacUpdate promo which made it cheaper.) 9 will probably be out in the fall too. It's when they release them.
