Now before you misinterpret the title, I'm talking about apps that run, but don't show up as running in the dock. This started happening after the latest OS update. There is an app called Rivet, which allows you to stream music, movies or pictures off your mac to your xbox360 or PS3. The program used to run without a dock icon. Kind of nice since it runs all the time and I can't accidentally quit it. Now when the app runs, the app icon stays in the dock as a running app, but there is no window to the app unless you open the preferences. The thing is that I can now easily quit that app. annoying.
Found this out by contacting their customer service.
So apple does not allow apps to run in the background if you want to use the app store.
