9 to 5 Mac offers a few screenshots from Apple's forthcoming Mac App Store and the related Mac OS X 10.6.6 update, revealing a few tidbits of information about how the store will function.

First, users will be able to sign into the Mac App Store using their existing AppleIDs, such as those created from the iTunes Store or MobileMe, operating in much the same way as the existing iOS App Store. Once inside the store, users will be able to browse for apps to purchase and/or download.

A series of code strings for options in the Mac App Store application's preferences indicates that the store will offer similar parental controls to those found in the iOS App Store, with apps able to carry age ratings of 4+, 7+, 12+, or 17+.

Also of interest is the fact that Mac OS X 10.6.6 will offer integration of Mac App Store searching for unknown file types. If a user attempts to open a file type that is not associated with an application installed on their computer, the user will be presented with a dialog box offering them the option of either choosing an application with which to open the file (as on current Mac OS X versions) or searching the Mac App Store to find an appropriate application.

The Mac App Store is set to debut for Mac OS X Snow Leopard users on January 6th.

I can't see very complex application suites like the Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, or even Microsoft Office coming to this anytime soon, if for no other reason than I don't think the App Store will support the DRM schemes those programs use. (I know the App Store will have DRM of a sort, but I think that Adobe et. al. would rather use their own.)

The functionality to find a program to open an unknown file type is pretty sweet. If it works.

Speaking of Software Update, I wonder if App Store apps will benefit from Software Update. I suspect so, if not now, certainly by Lion.

Of course, I'm extremely happy with Sparkle, and all apps that use it. The PC-side of the world seems to have nothing like it. (Well, Adobe seems to want to update every 4 days...)

There's functioning DRM on CS5? I don't think anyone who pirated it ever noticed...

I wonder about this too. Actually I would just assume get rid of each company's DRM and replace with a single one. What I wonder is how these big suites are going to handle being split up. The Mac App Store doesn't seem to support app suites (even iWorks is rumored to be split up). Personally, disolving suites is fine with me, there are many of the apps in CS4 I don't use. If the companies just change the price for the individual programs to something reasonable, the problem is solved (the concept of the "suite" has always been to get the customer to buy more anyway).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I only have leopard, should I wait for lion?

Snow Leopard is $29. Just take the plunge.

Windows has had this for years. I am very surprised Apple has waited this long to implement it.

Is the Mac app store an iTunes update?

Is this going to be another tab in iTunes or will it be a stand alone app?

It seems like a standalone app but if integrated into iTunes would have a much larger installer base.

Just wondered.

The extension search is a feature we have seen on installs such as ubuntu and its a welcome change to see it in the proprietary market

The first dialog is very obviously fake.

1. It's 'Apple ID' with a space, not 'AppleID'. Apple is not the kind of company that would get this sort of detail wrong.
2. The spacing on the dialog is horrendous.
3. What's with the generic app icon? It makes no sense in this context.

The wording on the second dialog seems a bit off somehow as well, but not so much as to draw much suspicion, if not for the fact that it came from the same source as the first.

Dashboard Widgets, Web Apps, Screensaver, Action Scripts, Updates....

BAAAAANG - ALL GONE !!!

RSS Feeds ? GONE !!!

Back to the Mac ? GONE !!!

Someone wana buy my MacBook Pro ????

And why exactly would all this stuff be gone? Why can't there be a Widgets category in the app store? I bet there will be. Am I missing something?

Looks pretty similar to what Windows has been doing for years, where a dialog comes up asking if you want to search the net for a suitable application or pick one.

Oh please! Do you seriously think that Apple just forgot about them?

1. Widgets are still available to download on the Apple website.
2. As are RSS Feeds.
3. Would you seriously sell your Macbook Pro if these two minor features were made temporary unavailable?

That would be awesome. Firstly to give Dashboard some more exposure - it needs the attention! And secondly to improve the updating mechanism - the current one - or the lack of one - sucks balls!

The mac app store application has its own updater which works like iOS.

It's very obviously in beta.
