mac app store won't show download progress?

Hello! I am new to mac and did some googling to figure out how I can see detailed status for a app store download (downloading mountain lion). Every page said to simply go into the app store and click purchased to see it but all it brings up for me as an available option is 'download' even though its already downloading. I provided a screenshot so you can see what I mean.

I see it but it doesn't show me the % that the download is at, or the speed of it. What am I looking at?

You appear to have a download status icon in the icon in your tray next to the Trash, what is that?
