You need to buy Snow Leopard, since it's not an update, but rather a new release. Software update, upgrade--what's the difference?

You can't get Lion without Snow Leopard, as Lion is only available through the Mac App Store, which you need Snow Leopard to access. http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/
