Part of what has made switching such a good move for me seems to be the stunning array of free quality software to do almost any job I need from my Mac.

For example - needed to convert an mpeg2 file to DV. No problem - downloaded ffmpegX for free and job done. I don't know where I'd be these days without programs like handbrake and so on - I've been able to spec my Mac out without loads of great programs legally and for free.

So am I seeing things through rose tinted glasses, or are there actually more good free apps available for the Mac than Windows? And if so, is there any reason for it?

And it strikes me that this is another counter to the "Macs are too expensive" argument.

You're right there are definitely a lot of good apps out there for us Mac users, but I think what makes them fundamentally better is they do exactly what they're needed to do with minimal effort and maximum result. In addition Mac apps don't seem to be as bloated or evasive as windows apps either.

Less apps than Windows but the ones we have are simply superb.

Got myself Salling Clicker yesterday - I know it's just gone Windows too but damn is it one amazing program. Controlling nearly every aspect of my iBook (with little flashing bluetooth dongle) with my Motorola L6. It;s just so damned cool
