It'll have come with the original disks, not the Tiger ones. Later versions didn't come on their own CDs but were bundled onto the System Restore disk (usually a DVD) however I reckon you'll have a stand alone Hardware Test CD somewhere. You put it in the optical drive and then start up holding down C which makes the computer start from the disk rather than from the hard drive. Then it's simply a matter of following the prompts to run the tests.

Just out of interest, did you upgrade or do a clean install of Tiger? Good luck. :)

I did the upgrade where it just installed over Panther and kept all my files. Ill have for sure look for the cd today and give that a whirl.

hey, thank you for the website. Ill give that a shot for sure too and report back hopefuly with some positive news.

I would bet that is your whole problem. You need to start from scratch and do a reinstall of Tiger.

Backup all of your files and wipe the drive and do a complete clean install of Tiger.

In defense of the idiot option, "Upgrade" works pretty well most of the time.
I've idiot-buttoned quite a few Macs now and not one has had a problem.

Im ram approved....

Sorry, my fault, I should have said that I recomment at least 3 consecutive passes to be fully sure that your RAM is good to go. However, so far, it does look pretty solid. Memtest is teh ballz.

That being said (assuming your RAM passes consecutive tests), it doesn't get us much closer to finding out your problem. One thing I've not seen yet is a request for the crashlogs from Safari. Can you please post the last full entry from a Safari crashlog as an attachment for us?

Ok. those 2 I ran right after each other.
I hadent had a crash for over a day so i thought I was good but today, I had Adium open and Safari with a few tabs and i opened iPhoto and BOOM. unit completly locks up.

Problem is, I cant post any crash logs or atleast none that I know of because when the unit locks up, all I can do is hold down the power button untill it shuts off and then turn the unit back on (unless there is of course some sort of ctr alt del type command for OSX that I dont know about)

Apple + Option + Esc

And if the machine is locking up, I'd look at your System.log entries for indicators of what might be happening.

I will for sure give that a try (the Apple + option + escape)

I would look @ the system.log and such but I dont know OSX nearly good enough to know where and what to look for

Definitely, check your system log. Since fsck didn't find anything and your memory checks out clean I suspect you're actually having a networking problem. Your comment about using the remote iTunes facility was one of the clues. It could be anything from a bad network cable to a bad port on your router/firewall device. Whatever it is, you should see errors in the system log(s) calling out the network if I'm right.

Also, see what sort of clues you see by running /Applications/Utilities/Console. Just start it and leave it running. Then see what sorts of messages are displayed as you go about your normal use.

Good luck.

im not sure how networking or a cord would play into this cause ive gotten my iTunes sharing problem fixed. just had to allow it past my firewall. umm im not sure to really tell what my logs is talking about but heres some so far

Well, it's probably obvious but these are all network errors. Even the error from diskarbitrationd is also really a network error.

The first thing I suggest you do is change the name of your Mac. I know that we can have long hostnames, but not all networking equipment or ISP's deal well with them. "Sohrab-Osatis-Mac" is kind of long. Your DNS server is having a problem, either because it can't use that name to bind or because your firewall is getting in the way. Try turning off your firewall to see if you can get DNS resolution to work. If you can, you'll know you need to reconfigure it.

hey, before we go further, I really appreciate the help so far cause this has been driving me nuts and Im fairly new to the mac scene (less then 2 years :p so still learning OSX)

I believe im doing this right but I went to Syste Pref/Account and for name I put just Sohrab now (I cant change the short name for some reason)

then, I went to System PRef/sharring/Firewall and turned that sucker off.

ummm by the way, before i added the edited bit to this post, I had Adium, Console log, Safari and 2 tabs with Text Edit open and I was opening a 3rd tab in Safari to go to my .Mac and system completly locked up again. I tried Apple + Option + Esc but that was a no go. This crash also happened after I had turned off the firewall and put a shorter name as my Comp Name

You don't include the actual panic message here from the crash log, so this is what I think based on what you've provided.

It appears that the DNS errors have stopped since you changed the name of your system and/or turned off your firewall. When this is resolved you should turn the firewall back on to see if they've really gone away.

Are you mounting a filesystem from a Windows box? Or sharing something to a Windows box? This time it looks like the crash occurred because of SMB. If you don't need Windows filesystems, turn off Windows sharing. (once again, a networking issue)

Most of the errors in your last system log were coming from USB. Do you have a USB hub on your system that could be misbehaving? It's always possible that the root cause of your problem is something like this, and all of the other issues are just symptoms.

Doesn't look like it's been (fully) renamed to me:

Jan 13 03:46:48 Sohrab-Osatis-Mac

Where did you rename it, in the DHCP client ID? You also need to rename it in the Sharing Prefpane. IME, the DHCP client ID and the Sharing name should be the same to ensure proper registration in the DNS. Assuming someone is actually typing your IP to a DNS entry.

Most of the errors in your last system log were coming from USB. Do you have a USB hub on your system that could be misbehaving? It's always possible that the root cause of your problem is something like this, and all of the other issues are just symptoms.

Alrighty, lets see.
Indeed I am networked to a Wintel. Its a home PC I have built and alot of times I just transfer files back and forth between them like vids, pics, music and documents.

Funny you mention USB. I have before recieved errors from my USB units that they were enough power to run everything. All I have are the stock USB plugs that come with my stuff. I was also very surprised when I got those erroes so sense then, ive unplugged most of my USB units to my Mac.

Doesn't look like it's been (fully) renamed to me:

Where did you rename it, in the DHCP client ID? You also need to rename it in the Sharing Prefpane. IME, the DHCP client ID and the Sharing name should be the same to ensure proper registration in the DNS. Assuming someone is actually typing your IP to a DNS entry.

The only place I went to was under Pref/Account and change my user name and now under sharing too. where else would I have to go to change the name?

If you haven't solved it yet try reseting your nvram and pram, that solved a similar problem for me see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238

you should also get 10.4.4/the other software updates released last week.

I will give that reset a try for sure. I just updated my sig too. Indeed I do have 10.4.4. Im usually on the ball with updates on 1st day as with 4.4, i just forget to update the sig hehehe :D

my console log is wayyyyy to long to post here so I updated the file to my .Mac account

here is the log in its entirity*sp? lol*

another edit, I just did the Ram reset also

OK. Whatever you have in USB port 2 is generating your errors. I assume this is a hub that you have, and you're not connecting some USB powered device into an unpowered port on your Mac. (like a keyboard USB port)

I looked at the log file you posted on .Mac. There are no panics in it. I could see that you halted the system yourself a couple of times. The system went to sleep a couple of times. And lots of USB errors. So are you still having the system crash at random?

Someone else pointed out that you should use the sharing pane to complete changing your system name.

BTW, there were no more errors from SMB so either your Windows shares are working again or you've turned it off. I suspect the name change is helping you here too.

Right on the money. The only USB port I have open is the one that comes on the Apple Keyboards. I got my Mouse plugged into it and the USB from the keyboard goes to the back of my monitor. and so does my iPod dock. Any idea witch port is #2?

Indeed I turned off the sharing but I also turned it back on. The reason I believe were seeing my system go on and off is because I have it set to start going to sleep if I havent touched it in about 10min. (I dont mind wearing down the crap out of my PC but my Mac is my baby :D )
As of right now, I havent had any crashes, minus the one I had two days ago but ill play with her a tad today and give you guys an update.

Look, is it out of warranty? At this point I think it's clear there's something fundamentally wrong with the hardware someplace. You likely need a replacement logic board or something. Sometimes hardware is faulty or just breaks.. Take it into Apple and ask them how much it will cost to fix. If you don't have AppleCare, chalk this up to a learning experience and BUY APPLECARE FOR YOUR NEXT MACHINE.

It's worth it.

oh I got me plenty of AppleCare left. Untill end of 2007 I believe but I was hoping it was something that we could fix

if i have to replace my logic board, will that mess any of my stuff up? I mean I know it shouldnt effect my hard drive and such but can it?

if so, whats the best way to backup everything? I want all my photos and music and such. I have backup 3.0 but u know what, i tell it to backup 30GB worth of stuff but the backup it makes on my external HDD is like 2.8GB...wtf is up with that?

It's highly unlikely that a logic board replacement will affect your hard drive in any way, shape, or form. That being said, I would never let it happen without backing my stuff up, because who knows what else might happen.

I suggest using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to back up everything onto another hard drive or your external hd.
