My hard drive crashed last week and I have had it replaced with a new one. I tried to recover my files from my backup disc but the drive got disconnected during the transfer. Now everytime I try to restore my files, when I clinic on the latest backup, it says it is in progress and I can't do anything with it. I have managed to restore an old backup file but with a lot of recent work missing. Any help/comments would be appreciated.

What software did you use to backup? If you used Lion 10.7.2 or a later version of OS X to a USB drive you will have a recovery partition on the backup disk.

Option key boot and select the USB drive as the boot source. Once that starts use Disk Utility to erase the entire drive. Then quit disk utility and restore.
