Mac book air white screen

Please can you help - my Mac Book Air will start up and I can get to the log in requiring password - then after entering password - it then goes to a grey/white screen - what must I press to get it back to normal start up. Many thanks in advance

What troubleshooting steps have you taken so far?

Have you tried booting into recovery mode and using the Disk Utility to check the health of the disk and/or repairing them? That's the first place that I would check. If it's prompting for the password, while you're in there also check disk permissions and repair those as well if you can.
