Hold down Command+R when you hear the Apple "bong" noise after pressing the power button. It will boot into recovery mode. Select Disk Utility and select your hard disk in the left column. Then press the First Aid button and allow it to scan the disk for file system errors.

Have you tried holding Command+S when you hear the Apple "bong" after turning on the power?

There are at least two other recent topics about failures to boot, about apparent bricking. Please subscribe to those.

It does have several SMC and EFI update payloads in the install package, so that is a possibility, if one of those failed. Let's hope not.

Can't believe that anno 2016 people resist to make valuable back-ups. I do hope he hasn't lost any important files.

Good luck restoring his bricked device!

    Cheers
