The Calendars app will not show Holidays even though it is selected in Preferences.

I have tried cycling the check box, turning iCloud off and on, even completely clearing out all saved preferences, data files, and caches by manually deleting them yet still, the only additional calendars that will show up are "Found in Apps" and "Birthdays". No Holidays.

Am I alone on this one?

You need to subscribe to a US Holiday calendar if you have not done so here is how:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202361
Here is the iCloud web address:
webcal://ical.mac.com/ical/US32Holidays.ics
Here is how mine is configured:

That's a workaround, yes, and ends up causing 2 holiday calendars on my iOS devices.

As you can see at this link, which I got to through the link you posted, you should not have to subscribe to an additional holidays calendar.

I should have said in my first post that I do see the same behavior. Setting the "Show holidays calendar" in the Mac Calendar Preferences does not show holidays. I have to subscribe to US Holidays for it to work correctly.

To "workaround" iOS showing 2 holidays: Go to Calendars on the iOS device and uncheck the US Holidays in the the Other section.

Where can you find a list of calendars you can subscribe to?
I do not know any longer. I used to get them from Apple, but it seems to be orphaned now.

Launch the Calendar app and check the menu Help>Find Calendar Subscriptions. Note that the Apple web page that it takes you to has no newer listings than 2010.

More recent calendars(link is to the various Holidays ical) here. EDIT I wouldn't subscribe to any of them after having looked at the descriptions for the calendars as there often is none: http://icalshare.com/categories/holiday

Sorry for leading anyone astray.

I also noticed the lack of support for the Holiday calendar on the Mac - though appears fine on iOS as written earlier.

And I think my issue arose after having let Windows 10 Calendar handle my iCloud calendars. I'm not certain.

I use da-dk holiday calendars. Since I use en-us macOS I tried adding the danish language in addition to the english one. And also try setting my macOS to da-dk using the macOS Sierra clean install method and also through the Region and Language PreferencesPane. Not a single thing has helped.

@iammike1 : you can look forward to the next release of macOS Sierra 10.12.4 - the Holidays calendar is back. At least I have it come back with the recent developer(pretty sure public beta too) beta release of 10.12.4 version 6

According to Apple that should not be necessary: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208541 .
Actually until macOS Catalina it was working fine: the Holidays Calendar automatically included all holidays in the region. NOW no Holidays show up although checked in Calendar General Prefs...

Another flaw in Catalina I suppose...
