If a newer Cleaner for Mac is indeed still in development, and its software engineers are reading this, there is one single feature that I've always hated Cleaner for missing it (not that I know any other software that has it, although I find it indispensable and amazing that they did not think about including it).

PLEEEEEASE, add a Suspend and Resume options, that survive after closing Cleaner, in case an energy shortage, unexpected quit, reboot, manual quit or whatever other interruption that might happen while Cleaner is doing its job.

Compression Master

I've been using the Popwire Compression Master and it kills Cleaner in my
opinion and they have some really high-end Compression Engines as well. I
think Apple should buy that company instead. Check them out at

I've tried that as well and it works like a charm! Doesn't quit on me all the time and has real support for the big standards. Maybe not as widespread as Cleaner, but it's a great app!

Unfortunetly the app is lacking WMP and Real support (at least they are not mentioned as output options on the site). And those two formats are the most used for web delivery. It also lacks MPEG-1 support (which is a great "generic" codec because it is almost universally playable.) and MPEG-2 support.

That's want makes Cleaner so popular, and valuable, is that it's the most flexible compressor out there. Not just in terms of what it will output, but also how many options you can tweak to make sure you get exactly what you are looking for.

I heard a rumor somewhere that MPEG and Real support are being developed right now. WMP I don't know. But who want's Windows on their Mac anyways? ;)

That's too bad, its sad when a Mac Software company goes under. I'm sure that if it's valuable to the Mac, then Steve will intervene.

They already have Compressor.

...but Cleaner does a lot of stuff that Compressor simply doesn't. I don't think I can get through a day without using Cleaner one way or another.

Same here. Compressor simply sucks, and Cleaner gets the [batch] job done.

I have very little knowledge when it comes to this sort of thing, but I've seen several video files that say 'encoded with Cleaner' or something to that effect, and they've all looked appalling for their filesize. So personally I can't mourn the possible loss of Cleaner.

Edit: And I just noticed that this thread is a year old

Why doesn't Popwire work using standard QuickTime codecs?
I'd love a Cleaner-killer that deals with Sorenson 3 Pro.

I've seen lots of really bad things cut w/FCP so does that mean FCP should be tossed? ;)

Cleaner is kinda like the Photoshop of its field. The treatment of the Mac version has been disappointing.
