I recently picked up a PowerBook running Panther, and I am wondering if there is shareware or something to prevent the region code of the mac DVD Player from being changed perminently. please help!!!

You can see if there is firmware for the dvd drive that you can flash to make the drive region free, then you can use Region X to set the region in OSX to reset the region setting in DVD Player/OS X without locking the region after 5 changes.

You can also use VLC and it completely ignores the region settings and can play any DVD you put in it. However the latest version seems buggy on my G5 and no audio plays(audio seems fine on iBook however)

You can find VLC media player on versiontracker.com. And you can find Region X and info on updating your dvd drives firmware on: http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/

You may want to try the VLC method first since it's the easiest way and you can possibly foobar your dvd drive when doing the firmware update.
