I think the 9400m and 256mb of VRAM and 8gb of memory would be more beneficial. I think the previous Mini would only go up to 6gb and have Intell GMA graphics.

The 2007 Mini, the model preceding the 2009 model, can only go to 3.3GB of ram. Still, a 2006/2007 Mini would be an excellent machine for the uses outlined by oldhifi.

For Facebook and finding a steal on Amazon?

You're suggesting a machine matching your needs, not the OP's.

Does your mother-in-law need 8GB of ram to browse Facebook and google a recipe? Or 6GB for that matter? … or anything more than 2?

Anything that will keep you from paging out to a slow mechanical Hdd is worth it.

For me, Facebook is unbearable on my 1.67 PowerBook.

Well yeah, but I think that's where the whole PPC things comes into play and why an Intel CPU Mac mini would be the way to go. I even disliked FB on all my PPC machines.

+1. This is the PPC chip struggling with loading the modern web. A low end Intel with 2GB Ram wouldn't do this. If fact she might be able to sneak by with 1GB if she only keeps one or two tabs open and no other runnings apps. But really, for like $40, 2GB is a worthy upgrade even if its after the purchase.
