Mac games, like every other product (computer or not) in general, depends on potential revenue verses cost. The bigger the Mac market, and more specifically the more of the "game player" demographic that use Mac, the more incentive there is to build products for it. Companies, like EA, Blizzard, etc..., have to spend big money to make those triple A titles, money they have to get back in spades to justify making a game in the first place.
At what percentage of total potential customers who own personal computers
and buy games do you target Mac if the effort isn't easy? Games these days are built on top of engines, those engines had a target platform(s). Blizzard's engine(s) seems to have included Mac from the early days, so it's easier. EA seems to have some engines that work on Mac, so it depends on product design choices early on in development. But... if your engine doesn't compile easily to Mac, then it is not a trivial effort to make it work and supportable (support is the other major cost of any retail product market) for the Mac market.
I, and some partners, are in the process of creating a game development company (yes I know - who isn't these days *sigh*), and target platform(s) is the first decision after "let's do it". We are building toward pilot projects to feel out our product directions. Our initial target market includes Mac, PC, and potentially one or more consoles - our initial game engine reflects this choice. We are realistic, we are targeting mid-market (in terms of game quality) because costs, resources, and time put triple A titles out of reach... for now
😉. As a small game development startup Mac has distinct advantages, chief amongst them the current state of games on Mac.
The good news for Mac gamers is, the current market penetration and projected trends of Apple's successes will likely attract the major game development companies in short order if those trends continue.
Thanks.
OH,
You guys are only looking at the MAINSTREAM games. Anyone bothered to look at the indie scene?
Some of the best games I've EVER played have been on the Mac and been developed by Indie designers.
I hope my company will make products that rate such words soon.
