I'm an artist (www.jeffsoto.com) and I'm looking for information on making some free icons that viewers can download off my site. I know there is a program called Iconbuilder but is this needed? It's $80 on their site, which I'd rather not spend. Is it possible to create the icons in photoshop? Are there any tutorials out there? Thanks!

You can make the icons in Photoshop. After all, icons are just little images. You can use an application called Icon Composer which is part of the Developer Tools included with OS X to create the actual .icns files. It's very simple. All it does is takes image files (PNG, IIRC) and creates .icns files from them. You supply it with 4 image sizes (16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 128x128), and 3 optional "hit masks", and it will output an icon for you.

I've used it to design a create a couple custom icons that I made in Photoshop and Illustrator, and it works fine.

As an aside, I'm amused by the fact that Icon Composer itself has a really awful grainy looking application icon.
