Hello MacRumors,

Recently, I've acquired an iBook G4 PPC with Leopard 10.5.8 for tinkering purposes, and have set my attention on Mail 3.6. I have successfully been able to get Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail to work, but not AOL. More specifically, I can receive emails through AOL but can't send them out. (At the time of my testing, I also couldn't email from my Android phone as well, more on this later)

I have visited many sites that have instructed me on how to set the SMTP. I've even tried several configurations just for the sake of it. I was unsuccessful every time. When I'd use Connection Doctor to test the IMAP/SMTP on suggested configurations, I'd get a green dot and a message stating, "Connection and login to server succeeded" But I still couldn't send out emails.

One site I visited was the Image Challenge from AOL. This actually seem to correct the issue with my Android phone. However, I still can't send emails out via Mail 3.6

Any advice?

The fact that you cannot send messages is not a flaw in Mail. It is an artifact of the security policy between your ISP and AOL. The fix is simple:

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.aol.com:screen name

Click the [Server Settings...] button.

Uncheck Use Secure Sockets Layer

Authentication: [Password]
Server port: 587

Enter your AOL Screen Name and password in their proper locations.

I tried using smtp:aol.com:username

unchecked SSL

Port: 587

And this time Network Doctor responded with a red light an an error.

Thanks for all your help MisterMe!

I found out the right info from AOL finally.

IMAP Setup Information

Email Address: username@aol.com
IMAP Username: username@aol.com
Incoming Mail Server: imap.aol.com
SMTP Outgoing Server Address: smtp.aol.com
Set the port to 587
SMTP Username: username@aol.com
SMTP Password: same as used to login to Mail
For a secure connection check the SSL option for IMAP/POP and TLS for SMTP in your mail program.

POP Setup Information

Email Address: username@aol.com
POP Username: username@aol.com
Incoming Mail Server: pop.aol.com
Remember to check the option for leaving messages on the server
SMTP Outgoing Server Address: smtp.aol.com
Set the port to 587
SMTP Username: username@aol.com
SMTP Password: same as used to login to Mail

I hope this serves as useful to other AOL email users. 🙂
