Mac Mail Issue ?

I have been having this issue for a while now and cannot find a solution.

I set the prefs to sort the mail by date and newest to oldest, but on reboot find that these setting have defaulted back to oldest to newest.

I have tried the removal of the mail plist and rebooting mail, this worked for a couple of resets but it has now started to default again, any ideas.

Is there another mail program I can maybe use which is deemed better than Mac Mail.

"Better" is very subjective. However, give the free Mozilla Thunderbird Mail app a try. Other than Mac Mail, it's the only one I would personally consider as a replacement.
