Mac Mail issues

Hi Guys,

My Apple mail keeps crashing randomly and I noticed in the bottom left of the app it says downloading messages and the number is going as fast a stopwatch it was just at 112,000 emails!!! I've not got that many!

any ideas as i think this is causing the crash? I have 4 accounts iCloud, gmail, and 2 separate imap accounts.
