Mac Mail Memory Overrun

Ever since the update to 10.5.5 my mail app will not run. Are there other mail apps that can be used? This is driving me nuts. Thanks...
 
OK... got mail to stay open by rebooting, totally off then back on. And I had set Mail app to open at log in... fingers are crossed that it will stay open.
