Mac mail > no sound when monitor is plugged

Everything works fine with my Mail app on my macbook pro (whoosh when i send, and beep when i receive email)...but when i plug my monitor...i do not have anymore sounds from my mail app.

probably audio out gets switched to the monitor. does it have speakers? and/or do other sounds play from the macbook pro??
