I've set up my gmail account to be an imap on Mac Mail. However, when I delete my email it goes to my trash in both my Mac Inbox and Gmail Trash. However, when I got back to my original inbox, all the emails I delete return to that folder. Am I doing something incorrectly here that I should or should be doing?

It's been like this for two days and it would be nice to be able to delete something that I have from like 4 years ago no longer in my inbox. Especially it involves my ex.

Thats normal for IMAP mailboxes - especially Gmail. Here are Googles recommendations:

Trash:
Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox > do NOT check
Store deleted messages on the server > do NOT check
