Mac Mail rules manual application not working

Hi,

I'm setting up some rules in Mac Mail (set color of message if sender's name matches a certain word), but when I select my whole inbox, right click and select "Apply Rules," nothing happens.

However, if I do the manual "apply rules" to a single message that meets the requirements, it does become colored/highlighted. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Running 10.7.5.
