hi
a problem with mac mail. while the laptop is at the office the mail program works fine, out of office it does not - it recives mail but does not send. we have our own mail server (leopard server) it's on the office network. We use IMAP. We connect via VPN to our office network so the SMTP is always the same. When the folder username-library-mail is deleted mail recreates it and sends mails for some time but then stops.

thunderbird works fine using same settings

what causes this phenomena?

They are not the same settings. That said, sending mail through a foreign SMTP server is fraught with problems--usually with picking the correct port. Port 25 is the default for SMTP. You may try using Port 587. If that does not work, then Google "SMTP Port" for other possibilities.

I'll add that while mail is recreating the username-library-mail folder, mail sends emails out. it stops after some time. the settings are the same, but it just stops. There can't be a problem with SMTP since it work for some period of time, if the ISP blocks some ports then it would be impossible for it to work while mail is recreating the folder ...
