i just got a new imac and macbook yesterday. my mail application is different that my old mac. i am wondering how i can set up the mail software so i have to double click to open the message rather the single click. this prevents opening mail that i dont wanna read.. like spam.. etc

You're using OS X's built-in Mail application, right?

Double-click on the far-right of the header above your list of e-mails, right above the scrollbar. That will hide the message pane and you'll have to double-click to open messages in a new window.

Double-clicking the header again will bring the message pane back.
