is there any way to make the display vertical instead of horizontal? so the sender and date are in one column, and the message window is next to it, instead of top and bottom?

Letterbox (10.5 stable, 10.6 beta) or WideMail (same situation, but a bit difficult to tell if it'll work with SL).

Actually the column layout can be a lot more efficient depending on your tastes and the number of messages you have to scroll through.
