Any thoughts on an iMac replacement being a Mac Midi, a stacked version of the Mac Mini instead? Would include a discreet graphics card etc. Lower spec than the Mac Pro of course, and Apple could market it with the monitors, that they already sell.

Incredible unlikely. The Pro line is already covered by the 2018 Mini and iMac Pro.

Sure, but I was thinking about the iMac line including the pro. Drop the iMac line completely and replace with a Midi line using the same processors. Just daydreaming and unlikely, I know. I was thinking about the next iMac refresh and if they would stick with the all-in-one approach, or match the rest of their desktop lineup - 2018 Mini and 2019/2020 Pro. A Midi would replace the iMac perfectly.

Some folks like AIO formfactors, and the iMac is iconic. I doubt it will be killed off, but a Mac Midi or xMac would be a great addition to the lineup.

Perhaps but the lines have a lot of overlap now—more next month. It would make sense to replace the iMac Pro with such a machine but I'm ok if that doesn't happen. I'll go out on a limb and predict that the Mini gets a decent GPU first (could happen, right?).

How old does one need to be to remember all the armchair experts and PC centric rags who screamed that no one would buy the first iMac because it wasn't expandable except for RAM? And then Apple sold a million.

I think the reality is that most folks prefer the AIO. Those who don't are a niche market. Ok, there are thousands who would argue against that here—out of the many millions who buy iMacs, do what they do and would never think of looking for MacRumors.

I do wonder if the iMac Pro would have existed had Apple not made the misstep we call the 6.1 Mac Pro.

I do love the iMac. I have one myself (mid 2017, 2TB fusion) but I have seem a lot of comments about the dated design (not sure I agree with this), large chin etc, and was wondering what Apple are going to do with a refresh. Thin bezels is the obvious one but I realised that the iMac sits out on its own and between the mini and the Mac Pro. Both of these need an external monitor so i was thinking a bold move would be to apply the same principle to the mid-range, i.e. iMac replacement.

in truth, I can’t seem them dropping it either. So many films and TV shows stick an iMac in the shot as it’s such a good looking pc. We’ll see what they do.
