Hello, I have a mid-2011 mac mini that has been running really slow lately. I was hoping to speed it up by upgrading the ram and adding an ssd. Would an ssd connected over usb work or would the performance be bad. I looked at the guides for installing it internally but worry that i will break something. Any reason that any ssd in an external enclosure and this http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/mac-mini-%28intel-core-i5-2*5ghz%29-ddr3---mid-2011/CT3309246 ram would not work?

Would it be worth in investing in a thunderbolt to usb 3 cable? My only concern here is that i use the thunderbolt port for graphics because i have issues waking the monitor form sleep when using hdmi.

The 2011 only has USB 2.0 so you're not going to want USB.
An external Thunderbolt drive is what you want.
Here's a similar thread with some numbers for you.

Just make sure you use a drive with two Thunderbolt ports and go from Mac Mini to drive and then from drive to Display.
