I have just bought a BTO top of the line 2014 i7 mini with SSD installed.
AS I need more storage decided to try a Kioxia Exceria Plus G3 nvme drive 2TB model in the place of the apple one.
It works great on a chinese nvme adapter designed for this mini model. The picture is below.

The SSD has 730 MB/s in read and close to it in write which is impressive for the 2x PCI speed in the mini.
I'm really happy with how it turned out. Trim works automatically out of the box, sleep works, Monterey runs great.
In the upper bay i have installed an WD RED 2TB SATA SSD designed for NAS storage.
Haven't tried the higher os with OCLP yet.
Just wanted to let you know. it would probably be ok in 2015 MBP or Air 2015/17.
Take care.

I also have a 2014 with an Apple SATA SSD SMO256G and I would like to add an NVMe for more storage. But every vid I've seen is attaching one of these adapters to an existing HDD. I'm hoping I can simply stick the adapter on top of the existing SSD.

Can you explain what you mean by ".. I decided to try a ........ nvme drive 2TB model in the place of the apple one". Do you mean you tried that brand instead of an Apple one or did you take the Apple SSD out? Sorry if this a numpty question. :)

Yea. As you can see i took out the whole apple cable and replaced it with the Chinese adapter for nvme drive. And also the sata 2.5 inch drive with the cable i had to add as it was missing. My unit originally had only apple branded drive and cable. Alternatively you can get the adapter for nvme drive for mbp or mb air and connect it to the apple”s cable. Its exactly the same as im MacBooks.
