No migration. 100% clean install. But it was a faulty unit. I've gotten a new one last week and haven't any problems with it ever since.

So is this your third replacement then? In the other thread you mentioned that you got another replacement this week.

Anyway, I also got a new Mini this week and had my Magic Mouse and Keyboard lock up twice. The screen did not freeze and music continued playing, I just couldn't move my mouse or use the keyboard for a minute. Everything went back to normal after. I am currently figuring out if this is the BT issue everyone is having or something else. Will try to plug in the keyboard next time to check if it works then, the issue is not really reproducible. Apart from that, I am really happy with the Mini.

This is exactly what happens to me. It looks like it is locked up but it really just lost the BT connection. I did check the keyboard and the touchpad and both of those stop working too. I found I can shorten the time it take to reconnect by turning my mouse off and on

I see, so it is the BT issue then, I was afraid it is something else. I am using a cheap USB3 hub which might cause the trouble, will see if I can get rid of it. Of course if would be nice if Apple would release an update for this, but I doubt it.

This is a fascinating thread. I took delivery of a 2018 Mac Mini (i7, 16GB 1TB) yesterday and it literally locked up in the first 15 minutes of using it. Since then I have had it lock up a few times. For context I'm setting it up as a 'new' mac.

What's more it currently won't shut down properly, it just seems to hang during the shutdown process. I've managed one successful restart, but two or three others haven't worked either.

I'm going to try switching off auto update on the time tonight, but I've also left it switched on all day today in-case it was any background setup processes that were causing issues.

To say this has been a disappointing experience of a new mac is an understatement. At almost £2,000 for a device this has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Is it the bluetooth disconnect that looks like a freeze but then starts working after about 30 seconds?

I don't have anything connected via bluetooth. Wired USB keyboard and mouse. One of the lockups I had a Youtube video playing, and the screen froze and the video stopped, but the audio continued for all 15 or so seconds. Then everything "caught up" super quickly when it unfroze. No mouse movement or responsiveness at all during the lockup.

Finally got my Mini purring along. Optimised the settings, switched off file vault, re-jigged a few bits of iCloud Drive and changed the default settings in finder regarding opening to recents (which caused no end of trouble trying to load thumbnails for 95,000 images).

This might sound stupid, but if you haven't spoken to Apple support, do, I found them surprisingly helpful.

So the lock up issues are definitely BT related, when the mouse and keyboard lock up connecting the charging cable makes them responsive again. Will buy a 3rd party BT adapter until there's a fix (which might be never).

I'm not sure it is. I'm having this issue and I have zero bluetooth items. However, as I said above, "One of the lockups I had a Youtube video playing, and the screen froze and the video stopped, but the audio continued for all 15 or so seconds. Then everything "caught up" super quickly when it unfroze. No mouse movement or responsiveness at all during the lockup."

Sounds like it is a different issue in your case then, sorry.

Yes. I'm on my third replacement.. kind of crazy.. but it seems Apple has finally fixed these hardware issues, since my current Mini has been running flawless for a week now. *knocks on wood*

So my advice to anyone experiencing these problems: get a replacement if you still can!

Hi all,

I have found a way to make my Mac mini 2018 stop freezing :)
I ran Activity Monitor to try and catch what was running when it locked, and I waited for the event to happen, waited and waited. Days went past weeks/months!!!!

I had to stop all programmes running that I could because there was a problem with Catalina 10.15.5 update and the Lacie D2 pro drive, I had closed Activity Monitor and low and behold the Mac locked up !!!!

Try it yourself and see it it works...
