ink and blank media actually aren't hugely marked up...cables on the other hand are more like 95-99% off. A USB cable costing $41.99 costs Best Buy > $1.

You are correct. It does cost Best Buy greater than $1. Its about $3-$5.

Thing do however not on the spur of the moment, Apple employees who make such comments come across as double faced which looks bad since they represent the company.

Everything Apple says should be taken with a grain of salt, that would mean PBG5, iBook G5 and video iPods. ;) :)

OMG! Maya said Powerbook G5 ! They will be out Tuesday!! ;)

I even chatted with one of them about Tiger for a little bit, but he didn't know anything beyond what we know...

I was in an Apple Store browsing to buy my next Mac, and the "Specialist" didn't know what Core Images was. When I mentioned it was in Tiger, he looked away (you know that nervous look when someone asks something you don't know and you are either ashamed you don't know it or are trying to make up an answer)...I highly suspect he didn't know what Tiger was.

And, yes, this was an Apple Store.

Maybe he wasn't sure if he should be discussing unreleased products with customers.

LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE!!

I bought a PDA and was assured by the Salesman that a cracked screen was covered under the warranty....

Guess what happened when I cracked the screen and tried to get it replaced??? "We're are sorry but that is not covered!"

I could have just saved the money I spent on the warranty and bought a new screen. What's worse is that my warranty ended as soon as I told them the screen was broke! So if something else went wrong after I got the screen replaced (which I paid for) it would not be covered.

Not slamming you personally.

But I will repeat myself, the #1 rule in consumer issues is that what is written out weighs in most cases the promises that were verbal between you and the sale associate. Sure you might when if you has enough time and money to go to court, but that is not realistic for most.

OT (sort of): Before you sign or agree to any contract, read it through. If you are not happy with the terms, walk away. Or if you can get away with it, get them to change the terms.

Most consumers are not aware of the rights they sign away for things like cell phones, bank cards, and the such. the excuse used is everyone is doing it, so I have no choice. You always have a choice. You may not like the choice, but you have a choice always.

Keep in mind those that come to MR are better informed than most out there. The "specialist" was more than likely hired through a third party to "demo" the current offerings, nothing more.

What I am hearing is that people want the "geek shop" experience without low pricing. Sure the Mac geek shop will sell the 1.2ghz Mac mini bare bones, but charge more for the cables and such to make ends meet. But what I am hearing a lot of is that you (the collective you) will go to that shop to pick brains, but look for even $5 off, free shipping, and tax free (along with a free car wash :) ) It is time to start paying for the service you want. You can't have it both ways.

Finally... those Best Buy gift cards will be worth something again.
Been waiting patiently. Didn't Circuit City offer A Mac Lineup for a while also?

A little off topic, but relating to the mac mini... are they offering a different color case or something? On Yahoo! News, there is a picture of a mini in an apple store, and it appears to have a lighter colored case.

Here is the article

Anyone have any ideas?

I've seen that thing in person and it is just (as said before) the lighting in the store.

Go over to ipodlounge - there are quite a few posts by people trading the shuffle for a Creative MuVo or other flash player. In particular, the shuffle's poor support for playlists comes up often.

Sure, "Life is Random" is a great slogan - but just because it came from Cupertino doesn't mean that it's the right thing for everyone. One of the "gym rats" on ipodlounge complained that he wanted to switch between playlists - one for free weights, one while doing cardio - and the shuffle couldn't do it.

You can get a Creative MuVo N200 1 GB for $30 more than the shuffle 1 GB. The N200 has an FM radio, can record from its builtin microphone, record from FM, and even has a line input to directly rip analog to MP3. It's even a 1 GB USB flash drive.

AND IT HAS A DISPLAY so that you can have a bit of control over what you listen to. It also can play WMA files, something that none of the Ipods can do....

If I had bought a shuffle, then saw the Creative N200 - I'd return the shuffle in an instant.

OK. You buy that thing.. And then buy a crappy $150 PC of ebay to run it. So pay your extra $180 for a radio and a screen built into your ugly mp3 player made by a brand that barely anyone has heard of. If you already have a PC, I pity you, and especially the hastle of having to use it to load up your little device on Windows. In case you haven't noticed, people pay for apple's style, and uncluttered ease of use over all these other brands that easily beat them in terms of price and features.

Maybe he already has a PC, so it's only really 30$ extra (wow, it's pretty strange to say that choosing something not made by Apple costs more). Trying to tell him it's twice the price simply is not true. Also, considering the Windows license, I don't know anyone (not even Dell) who could come up with a 150$US computer. Oh crap, now I gave them an idea. A PC for the cost of the 1GB iPod shuffle :D

As for the "brand that barely anyone has heard of", Creative is the most known brand in the PC market besides CPUs (along with ATI and nVidia). You may have never heard about them, but believe me, you must be the only one. ;)

The only failure of the iPod shuffle for him is the inability to have mulitple playlists. At 512MB or 1GB, it may not be that useful, but still, some people do want it.

Mac mini late order shipping 2 weeks ahead of schedule

Mac mini late order shipping 2 weeks ahead of schedule
ordered mine several days after teh release, was told I would recieve a 8x superdrive (later to be emailed that i would not recieve this but a 4x drive) but the scheduled ship date was set at 2-15, it was shipped 1-27, and is scheduled to arrive 2-2, good job with the fast shipping, bad job with th PR.
Isnt it a law in the U.S. that if you advertise something (i even contacted them to confirm the 8x drive) that you have to provide the customer with what you promised? I used to advertise retail and was schooled to never advertise a deal unless I was sure it was correct, because we would be held to the deal (or have to offer a refund on the item, AND the customer kept the item. I believe it's called TRUTH in ADVERTISING LAW.

Your thoughts would be appreciated. Should I argue this (the new powerbooks have the 8x drive so I KNOW they have access to it.) or just live with the sentiment that they duped me?

p.s. I have written confirmation by an apple rep that I would infact recieve the 8x superdrive. BEFORE I recieved the email that I would recieve a 4x superdrive instead.

Give the guy a break he might have been new. Really who does know the complete truth about Core Image and the Mini at this time? I think the only people who know 100% are at Apple HQ!

I already bought a Mac Mini at Best Buy :)

My friend and I just bought a Mac Mini each at the local Best Buy here in Calgary (Canada). It said they were in stock on their website, but after looking for them for 10 mins the sales guy came back to tell us that he'd found out that they "couldn't sell them until Feb 12th" or something like that. However, we convinced him to talk to his manager who agreed to sell them to us :)

So, Best Buy's definitely selling them now!

Anyone have an idea of when there will be a 64 or even a 128 gpu option for the mini??

Does Best Buy = Future Shop?

We only have Future Shop here, no Best Buy. And no Apple reseller either. The only way to buy a Mac mini is to either drive two hours either to Montreal or Quebec city, or order on-line on Apple's website.

Which kinda sucks. :(

There are those of us that are at least hoping for a 64mb video card in the next revision of the Mac mini around the time of Tigers release. Though that does seem a bit early for a revision.

What's the usual timeframe for a revision? Isn't it 6 months?

Which would put the Mac mini's upgrade to at most about 1 month after Tiger's release.

Best Buy is owned by the same company as Future Shop, but no, it's not the same store... There are very few in Canada so far, AFAIK. There's only the one Best Buy here, while there are at least 4-5 Future Shop locations.

First off, good job of getting it shipped early. I ordered my Mac Mini the same day as yours but it still says it on order. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

As far as them saying it was an 8x drive when in fact it was only a 4x drive, I don't think you or I have the $$$$$ to go up against Apple's lawyers. I'm not sure you would have a case anyhow. They offered a refund before the item was shipped and it would seem to me it was all an honest mistake by someone on their end. Plus isn't this just like when a local store places an ad in the sunday paper and then later on you find out when you go to the store to pick to up the item you want; they say sorry, there was a misprint in the paper, blah blah blah........

Went to Bellevue Bestbuy today and they had about 20 1G iShuffle. I bought one with their extended service plan for $19.99. Sales person told me that in two years I could bring this in and get a new one/battery or refund. I thought it was a good deal.

well the thing is I wouldnt even care too much, EXCEPT, I ASKED the sales rep if I would be recieving a 8x superdrive, he emailed me back and said that he had checked and I WOULD be recieving the 8x drive. I also didnt recieve the email about a refund for the 4x drive listing (I want the computer either way), until after my mini had shipped.
Side note...it still has not arrived, it didnt even leave shenzhen China until yesterday, but has left memphis tonight.
P.S. I think i mentioned that I used to be in advertising...Truth in Advertising is a big thing...once they listed the 8x drive on their site thay HAVE TO provide the 8x drive for the price listed, (or substitute an equal or better (which is irrelevant)) the alternative is to provide a partial refund for the misrepresented item, in this case only a PART of a whole computer, so liability would either be refund for the superdrive or full refund, (consumer no having to return product) .
This sounds harsh, however teh alternative for the the company who advertises the misrepresentation is a law suite for ALL consumers who ordered ( or wanted to order) the product during the time that it was listed.
An email saying sorry and saying "we'll give you a refund if you don't like the 4x drive" is not sufficient.

included is a link to advertising law site...
