My mom needs a new computer to do huge powerpoints and photos. Apple and M$ have successfully destroyed powerpoint on her G4 with OS X 10.4 and office 2004, and I thought it best just to replace the thing.

I suppose it's silly to ask when the new Mac Mini's are coming out, since nobody really knows. I'm going to have to ask anyway, though, because the current line hasn't been updated for nearly a year.

I really don't want to buy her something that's going to be replaced in a month or two. Does anyone have any information about the next release? Specs, maybe? Thanks.

I would say the whole line up (with the exception of the Mac Pro) is likely to be updated at some point between now and september (usually happens around August), so if you can wait, then wait :)

I hope they don't drop the mini, i'll have to go out and get one if they decide to.

I'd like to have an added BRD option, and you know that'll be an option at the next board meeting. "Drop the Mac Mini, or add an option for a Blu-Ray Drive." :p

Didn't we hear that before? And the time between updates was even longer than it has been?

No, I think it'll still be around, but they've chosen to update it really infrequently.

If not, I'm sure I'll be able to grab one at the current prices from another retailer... if I have to... I won't be happy about it though.

Good call on the back-to-school thing, she can wait till early sept.

How hard is it to replace RAM on it? She needs 2GB, and I don't want to pay Apple. Can I buy it 3rd party and have them install it in-store or something?

Buy the ram 3rd party - definitely - MUCH cheaper, and installation is easy. Most ram manufacturers even have "how to install guides" on their websites.

Installation is easy? In a Mac Mini?

I just looked at the install, looks like a lot of fun, but I'm worried about voiding the warranty. I used to take apart and test laptop components, so I guess this isn't so bad... but yeah, applecare probably wouldn't agree.

Adding RAM to the Mini isn't easy IMO, it can be done though
