But -- if the monitor has a DVI input, the flavour of DVI on the Mini is immaterial.
DVI-I is simply DVI-D plus extra pins that carry the analog VGA signal. A monitor with a DVI port is only interested in the DVI-D component. An analpg (VGA) monitor will need the analog signal from the DVI-I port adapted to a 15-pin VGA jack (which adaptor is included in the Mini as noted earlier.)
Choose a monitor with DVI -- the screen is noticeably sharper with a digital interface.
Just been given a mini A1176 (2006?) 2GB RAM, 500GB 1.66Ghz and purchased a ViewSonic VX2370SMH-LED monitor to use with it.
The monitor works fine with an old VGA cale into the Mac VGA/DVI adaptor but gets "no signal" when i use a DVI- DVI cable from the monitor direct into the Mac.
I can confirm that a DVI-I adapter won't carry a signal via a DVI to VGA cable because the port only carries a DVI-D signal. You need a displayport to VGA for a VGA and a displayport to DVI-I/DVI-D for DVI.
I have a mini-DVI to DVI-I lying dormant for just this reason having had to buy a mini-DVI to VGA adapter to use with my VGA display, assuming it would carry both a VGA and digital signal from the Mac Mini. It never will.
