iStat Menus shows the fan is always on (inaudible, at around 1700 rpm), even under light usage (safari, mail, iTunes). Is this normal? I have the new i7 Mac mini.

Yes, when the power is on, the fan in a mini is always running.
note: the fan motor is running on maglev bearings, so even on 24/7, the fan motor should last as long as the rest of the electronics. 😎
