They help. Try downloading the program AppZapper. It is a free trial then drop the wireless utility on it and zap it. It should remove all traces of it.

You go to /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. You select your partition (which is usually "Macintosh HD") and hit Repair Permissions! View my screen shot for help...

Then I have no clue. I even went as far as to call a friend who uses a similar Edimax adapter, and it works fine on their system. Does the app open when the adapter is not attached?

I honestly don't know. If Installer works for other packages the problem is with the installed utility files.

You could try this driver after making sure the others are uninstalled:

Look for RTUSBD2870-4.1.1.0UI-4.0.2.0.dmg

The interface is clunky but it's what I used to get an Edimax working eventually.
You might also have to go into System Preferences/Network and configure as USB Ethernet if it hasn't already been correctly identified.
