I don’t know if this has been shared on this forum, but here are the official service manuals for the two Mac mini G4 versions.

Early 2005:

Late 2005:

An interesting thing you’ll notice in the late 2005 manual is that the “silent” upgrades weren’t silent internally. For whatever reason Apple didn’t let it be known externally that they released a new Mac mini G4. Perhaps because the Intel transition had already begun and it was replaced by the Intel version only 5 months later.

I restored my early and late 2005 Mac minis and they are working great!

  1. New Toshiba 256GB mSATA SSDs in the Ableconn IDE to mSATA adapters.
  2. New batteries
  3. New thermal pads for the GPUs on the bottom case (One Gelid Solutions GP-Extreme Thermal Pad 80 x 40 x 0.5 mm cut in half works for both)
  4. New thermal pads for the CPUs (One Thermal Grizzly KryoSheet 24x12x0.2mm cut in half works for both)
  5. Second-hand Apple UJ-875 SuperDrive upgrades (8x Dual-Layer)
  6. New 1 GB Crucial RAM upgrade (one of them already has 1 GB RAM)
I left the plastic frame between the CPU and heatsink. I'm not sure if it would be better to remove it. I don't think it's needed with the thermal pad since I think it's to protect the CPU from the thermal paste, but I'm not sure. It took a lot of effort to clean the old thermal paste off with alcohol and cotton swabs.

I used an air compressor at about 30 psi to clean the dust out; making sure to hold the fan in place with a small screwdriver to protect the bearings.

I read someone on the forum here said that all of the CPUs are 1.5 GHz, but these ones are clearly marked 1.42 and 1.5 on the dies. Perhaps they are the same CPUs, but they're definitely binned. I did not overclock them and I don't plan to.
