Mac Mini Killer ?

it might not be a killer , but the price tag could bring dell some customers
the AMD athlon x2 version (if they use the latest type) could work quiet well with a clockrate of 1900 MHz - 2600 MHz and a good overclocking potential could be tempting for some people who cant live without windows 7
..the intel atom version is more a dvd player with ability to surf online 😀 ,
but then again in the days of recession with the pound nearly at euro level and people looking more and more on the price tag then on spec, the atom version might sell quiet well

Yeah I thought this at first as I really on use my PS3 for media, but then I figured out you could buy 2 PS3's for the price of the blu-ray one and still have some change in your pocket. Think i'll stick to my mac mini and PS3 for the time being.
On a side note as my house is a mac house all my apple kit integrates very nicely, putting in a windows based system would somewhat upset the balance when it comes to sharing photos music and other media 😀
For a PC orientated house it would be perfect....then again look at the PC you could build for that kinda money....
Those processors are fairly typical in low-end (non-netbook) Windows laptops. Not really surprised to see them show up here. They're nowhere near as fast as the Core chips, but they're quite capable.
It's one step up from that. Think of it like a Celeron, but without the suck.
I think it's pretty nice.... CRU is kind of "meh!", but good GPU option, larger HDD, Blue-ray, 3.5" HDD, up to 8GB RAM, eSATA.... its getting warmer....
But still too big, and kind of flimsy looking. Biggest requirement for an HTPC.... Dont look like a PC!! This one still has a look of a mini-itx PC in a box chilling with your HT equipment.

If I was in the market for a small form factor desktop I would most likely choose this over the Mac Mini. The Mini wins on processor, energy consumption and perhaps design, but the Dell just ticks every other box; most importantly price.

might be tempting even for people who would have choosen a mac mini , as the top model comes with a blue ray drive and the amd processor is not bad and as i mentioned it has overclocking potential rough guess on the 1.8 is + 50% stable as the amd`s had always a good reputation for when it comes to theire overclocking potential

That's a good point. Both can exist. There will be plenty of people who want a relatively cheap, small footprint machine that runs OS X. I like mine.
The only way the mini can be killed is if Apple pulls the plug on that model. Hopefully, Apple would have something better in the same demographic to replace it with.
When Apple ditched the Cube, I was sad knowing that a small desktop was important. But when the mini came out, I totally forgot about the Cube. 🙂

That Dell is pretty sweet... Blu-ray, HDMI and you stick Boxee on that thing for under US$400? Very nice.
The Mini is at a disadvantage since it doesn't have HDMI (and can it access the same HD iTunes Store content as the AppleTV now?)
You can buy the Dell AND an AppleTV (which has HDMI and can play HD iTunes Movie content) for about the same price as a Mini (which still comes up short feature-wise).
I feel like Apple is SOOOOO close to nailing this segment, if they could just make a premium AppleTV (current AppleTV + Mini) and somehow integrate the App Store ecosystem for games and such (more family and party games, not a competitor to proper game consoles). If they can get the iTunes HD movie rentals right, then Bluray isn't such a big deal, especially since stand-alone BRD players are going to be at $50 very soon.

no apple wont i quess they had a agreement at least that would explain why dell has choosen the amd processor and not like in their other desktops intel
but it was a wise choice as the athlon neo (thats how amd is calling him) is one step above the intel atom
The question is, how capable is the (top end) GPU? With the AMD processor and this GPU, could one consider this a decent backup gaming platform.... key word being decent??
That could turn me into a possible buyer.....
