Has anyone had any issues with out put from there HDMI port on a late 2012 Mac mini running Catalina. It was working during previous versions and since updating to the latest Iv not had chance to try it but now it does not output to it.

Display port is fine but if I plug in a hdmi monitor at the same time it flickers as if it’s trying to switch from one monitor to the other but ultimately stays black.

Vnc into it with a hdmi monitor attached and it just shows a black screen and unknown monitor. The monitor detects it’s plugged into something but then sleeps.

Not had chance to do a install with a older version. Is this software? If so any ideas? Tried the usual smc, safeboot etc and still no joy. Or is this hardware and it’s just coincidence it’s failed? As I say thunderbolt/display port is fine and it runs headless most of the time anyway but it’s really annoying. Thanks.

As you can see in the forum, there have been issues about using external display(s) with Macs. I see people try buying new cables, changing the port without reliable result. This problem is not limited to HDMI but can happen with other ports as well.

I think almost all of the issues boil down to EDID communication.

I like this video's explanation about EDID.

And I wonder if anyone has tried using an EDID emulator to fix the issue.

Does just an HDMI monitor (by itself) function fine, no dual monitor setup (TB/mDP + HDMI)?

Thanks for the replies. I managed to get it working again. Seems it likes the TV and a monitor with a certain cable but other cables it doesn’t like. I just think ultimately it is very picky about what your using it with and what cable you use. Thanks for the help.
